Saving babies, one mile at a time!
On Sept. 8, 2012 Saints of Christ gathered in the early hours at Redeemer Lutheran Church parking lot to begin the arduous journey of the 15th annual Bike for Life ride from Armour to Sioux Falls. The trip totaled 105 miles, all on bicycle! The bikers ride to save babies from abortion by raising money to support the Alpha Center in Sioux Falls. The Alpha Center provides free counseling and ultrasounds to pregnant mothers who are considering abortion, in the hope that by doing so the mother will re-consider her decision.
At 7 a.m., the riders and supporters gathered for a word of prayer and were on their way. It started off as a pretty cool morning, but the wind was in the right direction, thanks be to God!
We arrived at our first stop at Faith Lutheran Church in Parkston, a little ahead of schedule. We had a light breakfast and were back on the road. By the time we left Parkston, the temperature had warmed up nicely and our fingers and toes had warmed up so we were good to go!
Riding through the river hills we had a little crash, but the rider (although a little scraped up) hopped right back on her bike and kept going! A rider trying to avoid the crash blew a tire, but that was quickly fixed and he too was back on the road. That was our only flat tire the whole trip! What a blessing!
We made it to Freeman at St. Paul Lutheran Church, also in good time, due to the wind pushing us most of the way. We had another fabulous meal, as Freeman is well known for, and something all the riders and supporters look forward to every year. The Alpha Center surprised us and brought the ultrasound bus for anyone interested to walk through. After a time of fellowship, rest and refreshment, we continued on to Parker.
The 3 miles we had to travel north from Freeman was a bit of a challenge as the wind was now coming out of the NW, but we slowly trudged through and made it to Hwy. 44, where we were able to go east again. A little while into our journey to Parker we noticed the ultrasound bus was following us! That was really cool to have them on our journey! The bus stayed with us until we got to Parker.
Our next stop was First English Lutheran Church in Parker where we had a nice snack and time of rest. From there we faced the wind again for another 4 miles heading north, and I truly believe it was getting stronger!
We made it to Tea, with the wind continuing to pick up speed, but thankfully it was still coming from the NW so it mostly pushed us there. Once in Tea we had to face the final 4 miles North into Sioux Falls. I was told the wind was blowing around 20-30 mph by that time, but we pressed on! We had another couple of small wipe outs, but once again were very blessed that no one was hurt badly, just a little scraped up.
Pastor Nour joined in on the ride at 57th street and helped to lead us into Sioux Falls. We met up with the group of riders that started out earlier that morning from Brookings at Sertoma Park. There were 12 riding from Brookings, so we totaled 27 riders now. We were given our t-shirts from the Alpha Center and rode the bike trail the final distance to the Alpha Center.
At 6:00 p.m., 11 hours after we began our journey from Armour, we were at the Alpha Center. There was a large group of people that met us with cheers and honking horns. It is always so emotional pulling in to our final destination.
After taking pictures and a few speeches of thanksgiving and appreciation, we shared in a prayer of thanksgiving, for God giving us our successful journey. The Alpha Center then treated us with a wonderful supper as is the tradition.
We would like to thank all of those who rode their bikes to Sioux Falls and those who prayed for the riders and supporters. We wish to thank in particular: Those who led/followed us with support vehicles; those who prepared food; Krull’s Market for donating goods for the riders; the Armour Chronicle for advertising the ride; and those who gave towards the cause of saving the precious gift of Life. As of today, we have received over $5,500.00.
